In need of a new kick ass metal EP? Then look no further because up-and-coming band Authors of Fate has just released Seat’s Taken, and boy is it killer.

Who Are Authors of Fate?

Authors of Fate is a metal band from Anaheim, California and they debuted in 2021. Described as “a blend of thrash, hardcore, and death metal”, the group consists of members Elan Mlagenovich on guitar, Robert Brunelle on vocals, Levi "Gizmo" Henderson on bass, and Bob Skay on drums.

So far the band has released 1 single earlier this year (Leather Liver) and 1 EP (You Will One Day Be Thought of for the Last Time) in 2021. Their newest EP, Seat’s Taken, was produced and recorded by Taylor Young (Nails, Drain, etc.) and it includes Leather Liver on it along with five other powerful tracks. Out of all six, I’ve reviewed the three staple songs that make or break the extended play.

TRACK 3 - MARK OUR ARRIVAL AN OMINOUS SIGN

Mark Our Arrival an Ominous Sign is without a doubt something straight from an epic battle scene: one of high stakes and risk. The most notable element of this track is that of the vocals, the exponentially insane vocals.

Brunelle has the perfect voice for the genre of death metal (and those adjacent to it) Authors of Fate have settled themselves in and even more so, his personal style is sublimely impressive.

There is a largely incorrect understanding within the metal community (and every other style it encompasses) that all of the vocal portions are just screaming with no talent or preparation but in actuality, a lot of metal vocalists are some of the most skilled singers we’ve ever come across in the industry.

It takes dedication and prowess to master this style while also keeping your vocal cords intact and Brunelle has nailed that right on the head.

TRACK 5 - SEAT’S TAKEN

This song is so kick ass and it should be considering it’s the title track. The instruments and the vocals go so well together; even though it's only one minute and 47 seconds it packs one hell of a punch.

The guitar riffs are insane and the drums hit you straight in the chest meanwhile the vocals are fucking gut wrenching, not to mention the killer bass.

You can truly feel the music with this one.

TRACK 6 - GEPHYROPHOBIA

Gephyrophobia, as defined in the dictionary, is described as the fear of crossing bridges and/or tunnels.

Whether it’s literal or an analogy for the fear of “turning a new page” in life isn’t explicit but what is explicit is that this song is an absolute heater.

Coming in at five minutes and thirty four seconds, Gephyrophobia is every drummer’s fantasy. Bob Skay is an absolute firecracker on the kit in this song and he carries it through a dark multiverse of raw passion and grit.

It’s almost like if you took the great John Bonham (Led Zeppelin) and pumped steroids into his veins due to the sheer tenacity of Skay’s technique.

After Friday’s release of Seat’s Taken, Authors of Fate have a handful of performances in cities such as Albuquerque, El Paso, and Tucson to commemorate this new chapter within their music. If you are anywhere near these cities and a lover of metal, I urge you to attend one of these gigs.

This was my first time experiencing Authors of Fate and they just gained another fan because holy shit, what a band.
