Clovers Daughter Debuts with “Am I Worth It?”

Album Review ★ Alyssa Bushman ★ @lissyb_21★ 2 Minutes

I had the privilege of seeing Clovers Daughter live for the first time at an open mic finale here in Vegas. It was in the Shag Room at The Virgin Hotel. An American-Palestinian, Noor Shami uses her ethereal voice to tell stories of identity and belonging. Her debut album Am I Worth It? was released on August 12th. Two words to describe the album: effortlessly cool.

The production is very indie rock. It is heavy and gritty at times and soft and floaty in others. The heavier guitar riffs and drum patterns pair nicely with her voice. Her voice is very interesting to me, it is deep but still soft and sultry. Each song has the perfect ability to transport you if you were in the room seeing it live.

“Win You Over” is such a fun opening song. It is short and so attention grabbing. She did just as the title implied and won me over. “Irrelevant” has super fun lyrics that made me play it back a few times to catch everything. One of my favorites was “my advice, just practice silence/don’t blame your guilty conscience”. It is this sort of evocative lyricism that peppers the whole album.

One song that really stood out to me was “Like A Criminal”. It has a super funky beat to it that has managed to sneak its way into my brain for a while. I find myself humming it throughout the day since listening to it this morning. The title track “Am I Worth It?” reminds me of the style of Not My Responsibility by Billie Eilish. Not in the context of the song as they have vastly different meanings, but in the whisper speaking and the production in the background.

Am I Worth It? is not only the perfect name for a debut album but it acts as a question to the listener as well as the song’s subject. The answer? Absolutely. Undoubtedly. This is a super iconic album that has already become a classic in my car. I cannot wait to hear what Clovers Daughter cooks up next.
